Your Child's First Visit

We know the first dental visit can feel big. Here's exactly what to expect so you and your child can feel confident and prepared.

A Positive Start to a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends your child's first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting.

At Happy Smiles, first visits are designed to be gentle, unhurried, and even fun. Our goal is to build trust with your child and establish a dental home where they feel safe for years to come.

Most first visits last about 30 to 45 minutes. There's no rush and no pressure. If your child needs a little extra time to warm up, that's completely normal and expected.

What Happens During the Visit

A step-by-step look at your child's first appointment, from the moment you walk in to when you leave with a smile.

1

Warm Welcome & Office Tour

We greet your family by name and give your child a tour of our kid-friendly space. They can explore the play area, pick a movie for the ceiling TV, and meet our team before anything clinical happens.

2

Getting to Know You

We sit down with you to review your child's health history, discuss any concerns, and learn about their personality and comfort level. This helps us tailor the visit to your child's specific needs.

3

Gentle Examination

Our dentist uses a "Tell-Show-Do" approach: we explain each tool in kid-friendly language, show your child how it works, and then use it gently. We check teeth, gums, jaw development, and bite alignment.

4

Cleaning & Fluoride

If your child is comfortable, we do a gentle cleaning and apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen developing teeth. For very young or anxious children, we may save this for the next visit.

5

Parent Conversation & Next Steps

We review our findings with you, share personalized tips for brushing and nutrition at home, discuss any recommended treatments, and schedule the next visit. Your child picks a prize from our treasure box.

How to Prepare Your Child

A little preparation at home goes a long way. Here are our recommendations for making the visit a success.

Use Positive Language

The words you choose matter. Focus on positive, simple descriptions of what will happen.

  • Say "The dentist will count your teeth" instead of "It won't hurt"
  • Avoid words like "shot," "needle," "drill," or "pain"
  • Let your child know the dentist helps keep smiles healthy and strong
  • Read children's books about visiting the dentist together

What to Bring

Having these items ready helps check-in go smoothly and ensures we have everything we need.

  • Your dental insurance card or Medicaid information
  • Completed new patient forms (available on our website)
  • List of any medications your child takes
  • A comfort item like a favorite stuffed animal or blanket

Practice at Home

Role-playing makes the real visit feel familiar instead of scary.

  • Play "dentist" at home with a toothbrush and stuffed animals
  • Let your child practice opening wide and saying "ahh"
  • Count each other's teeth with a finger
  • Watch our virtual office tour together before the visit

Timing Tips

When you schedule matters. Set your child up for the best possible experience.

  • Book morning appointments when kids are most rested
  • Avoid scheduling during nap time
  • Arrive 10 minutes early so there's no rushing
  • Make sure your child has eaten a light meal beforehand

We Understand Dental Anxiety

It's completely normal for children (and parents) to feel nervous. Our entire practice is designed around reducing anxiety and building positive associations with dental care.

Every team member is trained in child behavior management, and we never force a child to sit in the chair or open their mouth. We work at your child's pace.

  • Comfort items welcome in the treatment room
  • Parents are always welcome to stay with their child
  • Ceiling-mounted TVs with Netflix and cartoons
  • Noise-canceling headphones available
  • Calming aromatherapy in treatment rooms
  • Sedation options for children who need extra help

What to Expect by Age

Every stage of childhood is different. Here's how we adapt the first visit to your child's developmental stage.

Infants & Toddlers

Ages 0 - 2

A brief, lap-to-lap exam where you hold your child while the dentist gently checks teeth and gums. We focus on eruption patterns, early cavity risk, and teething guidance. Quick, gentle, and parent-centered.

Young Children

Ages 3 - 6

Your child sits in the big chair (with you nearby) for a full exam, gentle cleaning, and fluoride. We use kid-friendly language, show-and-tell tools, and make everything feel like an adventure. Sealants may be recommended.

Older Kids & Teens

Ages 7 - 17

A more comprehensive exam including digital X-rays, orthodontic assessment, and discussions about hygiene habits. We talk directly with your child about taking ownership of their oral health as they grow.
